West Coast Silence is an exploration of the dualities of our relationship with the natural world. The paintings are inspired by the starkly beautiful scenery around Elands Bay on the west coast of South Africa and are an attempt to project both the astounding power of this place and its tragic vulnerability to exploitation. Elkington uses the subtle language of colour, composition and brushwork to unsettle the complacency of the landscape genre.
