RICKY DYALOYI | Mirrors in the Crowd
24 October - 9 November 2026
Everard Read at Leeu Estates
Dassenberg Road, Franschhoek
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, 24 October @ 11am.
Mirrors in the Crowd is a visual exploration of contemporary alienation and the transformative power of empathy. In a world hyper-connected by technology yet deeply fragmented by social divisions, we routinely look past the strangers around us, treating them as background noise rather than extensions of our shared humanity. This new body of work explores the relationship between the individual and the collective, and the connections that bind us. Through scenes of everyday life in urban South Africa, Dyaloyi’s paintings capture the dynamism and resilience of ordinary people, revealing both the complexity of the crowd and the individuality of those within it.
The title speaks to the ways in which we recognise ourselves in others, inviting us to look beyond difference and consider our place within a larger human collective. Each figure forms part of a greater whole, yet retains a distinct presence and identity. Through this interplay between individuality and belonging, Dyaloyi asks us to reconsider the boundaries between the self and the other, and to recognise how our understanding of ourselves is shaped by the lives and experiences of those around us.
